Respiration Information
  • Six horses galloping neck and neck, heads extended, nostrils flared, as they race across the plains. Lungs pulling in air to supply the muscles with vital oxygen. This is what we all love to see - the epitomy of equine health and fitness. It may be a native pony nimbly racing over rutted moorland, or a highly trained Thoroughbred galloping over the pristine turf of Ascot. Whatever the activity, for a horse to perform at its best it must have an efficient and healthy respiratory system, uncompromised by infection, irritation, inflammation, or residual mucus. Worldwide, air quality continues to deteriorate, leading to an increase in respiratory disorders in the human population. Our horses are no different, they breathe the same air as us and are proving to be just as susceptible to seasonal allergens as we are. Winter time brings its own set of problems, with reduced access to grazing and more hours spent in stables, often with restricted airflow which can contribute to poor respiratory health. To help you ensure that your horse’s respiratory system stays in optimum condition, we have formulated a range of dried and liquid herbal formulations, rich syrups, essential oil sprays, and homeopathics, to help your horse maintain a healthy respiratory system whatever the season. In February 2009 my 15.2hh cob Rocky started violent head shaking for no apparent reason. Liverpool University Veterinary Hospital prescribed an operation to sever the nerves in his face. I declined and took him home following their advice of an outside stable, wet hay, and a change of field at his livery stable. I decided to try alternative therapy for Rocky. He now has Shake No More Gold every day, acupunture sessions and is ridden in a William Micklem bitless bridle. I am sure that this combination has saved Rocky's life and he will be given Shake No More Gold for the rest of his life.

I have used Shake No More Gold for the last 3 summers. My horse can now enjoy summer without her allergy upsetting her at all. I would highly recommend this product, I don't use anything else. The result is amazing!

My pony has suffered with seasonal head shaking for over 11 years now. In the past it has been managed with a nose net to make him rideable. This year the head shaking was so bad - even with the nose net - I thought I was going to have to give him the summer off ridden work. A friend suggest I try shake no more gold. It is fantastic - there was a marked improvement within 5 days and there has been such an improvement I have even been able to work him without the net on!! Thank you so much for making summer bearable! :-)

1.  Like all the Hilton Herbs products, this mix was first formulated in direct response to a customer request. Several years ago a customer contacted us to say that once the Hawthorn started flowering in May her horse became virtually unrideable, throwing his head around so violently his front feet came of the ground, threatening to unseat his rider. Hilary Self, our Medical Herbalist, formulated this product using herbs known for their ability to help maintain a healthy resistance to the allergens responsible for nasal irritation.

2.  Headshaking may be caused by exposure to bright light. Madigan et al. (1995) were able to reduce the severity of or eliminate headshaking in four of seven headshakers by reducing the amount of light these horses were exposed to. It is suggested that in some horses sunlight stimulates the facial sensory branches of the trigeminal nerve (the infraorbital branch of the nerve) and produces a nasal sensation; a phenomenon similar to the photic sneeze that has been described in man for many years (Madigan et al, 1995).
