- Six horses galloping neck and neck, heads extended, nostrils flared, as they race across the plains. Lungs pulling in air to supply the muscles with vital oxygen. It may be a native pony nimbly racing over rutted moorland, or a highly trained Thoroughbred galloping over the pristine turf of Ascot. Whatever the activity, for a horse to perform at its best it must have an efficient and healthy respiratory system, uncompromised by infection, irritation, inflammation, or residual mucus. Worldwide, air quality continues to deteriorate, leading to an increase in respiratory disorders in the human population. Our horses are no different, they breathe the same air as us and are proving to be just as susceptible to seasonal allergens as we are. Winter time brings its own set of problems, with reduced access to grazing and more hours spent in stables, often with restricted airflow which can contribute to poor respiratory health.
